Turn photonic quantum processors into real-world value

At Sparrow Quantum, we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of light-matter interfaces for quantum technology to enable state-of-the-art scalable photonic quantum systems.

Sparrow Quantum is building universal photonic quantum processors based on deterministic quantum emitters. We are looking for a Quantum Applications Scientist to build on Sparrow’s work on use cases and algorithms and to help push the frontier demonstrating what photonic quantum can do for real end users.

You will act as the bridge between our theory, experimental, and business teams and our end users. You will take an end user's problem, work out how our hardware can address it, and turn it into a concrete plan that you help execute together with the teams.

This is a technical role with a clear focus on applications. You have the theoretical depth to develop applications yourself, with an eye for the quantum algorithms behind them, the experimental insight to discuss feasibility with our experimentalists, and the overview to translate between what end users need and what our hardware can do. You are expected to take initiative and move from a loosely defined question to a workable solution.

Responsibilities of the role

  • Identify and develop use cases and quantum algorithms for our demonstrator, from initial end-user needs to proof of concept

  • Translate end-user problems into well-defined computational tasks, and assess where our hardware can offer value

  • Discuss feasibility with our experimental team, and feedback which hardware capabilities matter most for applications

  • Run and guide simulations of algorithms and use cases to benchmark performance and compare against classical approaches

  • Join end-user meetings initiated by the business team as the technical bridge, and turn results into clear recommendations

  • Work with the business team on proposals, demonstrations, partnerships, and funding applications

  • Represent Sparrow Quantum at conferences, workshops, and end-user meetings

In brief, we offer a unique opportunity for a talented Quantum Applications Scientist to collaborate with world-leading professionals in the field. Your work will shape how end users apply our quantum hardware and help steer our technology towards the problems that matter most.

Required qualifications

  • PhD in quantum physics or a closely related field, with a strong theoretical foundation, ideally with postdoctoral or industry experience

  • Good understanding of quantum computing use cases and where they may offer an advantage, e.g. in optimization, machine learning or simulation, with an interest in the underlying algorithms

  • Worked alongside experimentalists, giving you a solid sense of what is experimentally feasible

  • Solid programming skills, e.g. in Python, for simulating and benchmarking algorithms

  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical ideas to non-specialists, including end users and business stakeholders

Nice-to-have qualifications

  • Experience with quantum photonics, quantum optics or photonic quantum computing

  • Experience working with industry partners, customers or end users on applied projects

  • Experience leading projects or supervising junior researchers

  • Experience with collaborative R&D projects or funding applications

  • Knowledge of boson sampling, measurement-based or fusion-based quantum computing

  • A track record of publications in quantum technologies

Additionally, we expect that you thrive in a collaborative work environment and are inspired by the chance to contribute to groundbreaking advancements in quantum computing.

Desired abilities & competencies

  • Overview: you keep the big picture in view and connect technical detail to what matters for the end user and for Sparrow Quantum.

  • Translator: you are equally comfortable discussing algorithms with theorists, feasibility with experimentalists and value with end users.

  • Proactive and solution-oriented: you spot opportunities, take the first step, and come back with options rather than obstacles.

  • Constructive challenger: you are confident challenging assumptions, just as open to having your own challenged, and look for solutions that work both for the end user and for our hardware.

What we offer

  • Passionate international team and high individual impact: Join a high-performance team of dynamic and highly motivated international professionals working towards photonic quantum computing. Your innovative ideas, unique perspectives, and unwavering drive to succeed are essential to the team and will have a direct impact on the future of our organization.

  • Cutting-edge projects and world-renowned collaborators: Collaborate with world-renowned companies and researchers, working on cutting-edge projects that will shape the future of quantum technology. You will contribute to scientific publication, represent the company at conferences, and have the possibility of travelling to our collaborators for new insights and knowledge sharing.

  • Personal and professional growth: Expect a steep learning curve in a supportive environment at the border between research and industry. Our commitment to your growth and development is reflected in our supportive culture, which includes group-based knowledge transfer, skill development, and opportunities for training and mentorship.

  • Attractive compensation and career advancement opportunities: Receive a salary that is competitive and commensurate with your qualifications, with ample opportunities to advance your career and achieve your professional goals.

  • Inclusive and positive work culture: Become part of a positive and inclusive work culture where we build meaningful relationships and celebrate one another and our achievements. Our work culture emphasizes work-life balance, with generous vacation time, flexible working hours with up to 10-20% working from home, lunch paid by the company, and a focus on employee well-being.

How to apply
