We are seeking a senior fermentation scientist with experience in developing and optimizing fermentation processes to lead the company’s fermentation team. The candidate should have extensive experience in precision fermentation science, process control, and have a good understanding of microbial physiology. The successful candidate will be fully integrated in the existing team of metabolic engineers and will be responsible for advancing fermentation optimization and physiology at the company. We value proactivity and an innovative approach i.e. identifying areas of need and addressing them through the development of new technologies or by bringing outside technologies into the company.

The position requires interactions with several disciplines and partners, including analytical chemistry, strain engineering, downstream process development and external partners such as CMO’s and collaboration partner companies. You are expected to communicate on all levels and like to be involved with both commercial and science people.

Technology transfers and CMO support may be required during some periods, so you also enjoy traveling about ~5% on an annual basis.

Coordination with strain engineers, analytical chemists, and downstream process chemists to optimize collaboration and ensure a streamlined workflow that serves to improve overall process understanding with an emphasis on quality and robustness.

Improving systems for data collection and analysis.

Analyzing and presenting data to fellow scientists and external companies and partners.

Scale-down and up of fermentation processes (microtiter-plate and bench-scale fermenter).

Preparation of technology transfer documents.

Strong understanding of the connection between microbial physiology and process performance. Understanding of E. coli and S. cerevisiae physiology isa bonus.

Hands-on experience with bench-scale fermentation and plate-based culture methods with at least 5 years’ experience. Industrial experience is preferred.

\n
Familiar with analytical chemistry/assay methods, automation systems, and LIMS.
\n

Strong data analysis skills, including the use of statistics and control charts to monitor and analyze results. Ability to analyse large sets of data for hypothesis driven research.

Worked alongside strain high throughput screening teams and analytical chemistry teams to form a contiguous strain evaluation platform.

Experience working in a variety of scales. Preferably including up to pilot and commercial scale fermentation.
