Astrolight is on a mission to connect space and Earth using laser communication. We build systems that make it possible to send data quickly and securely between satellites, ships, and ground stations, especially in places where traditional radio communication does not work. Our technology supports both commercial and defense missions and is designed to perform reliably in real-world conditions. We are a fast-growing, fast-moving team focussed to bring fiber-like connectivity to space and beyond.

We are looking for a Mechanical Assembly Engineer to take ownership of assembling and integrating our laser communication systems. This is a hands-on role focused on building, aligning, and testing optomechanical hardware used in space and terrestrial applications. You will work closely with engineering and ensure that every system is built, calibrated, and ready for real-world use, with sub-millimeter accuracy and a zero-mess mindset. Your technical craftsmanship will directly contribute to the deployment of Astrolight’s next-generation products, ensuring every optical path is perfectly optimized and mission-ready for the vacuum of space.

What you’ll do:

Assembly and integration

  • Assemble and integrate optical and mechanical components, including fiber optics
  • Work with tight tolerances and ensure precise fits and alignment
  • Build small-batch, high-precision hardware

Calibration and alignment

  • Calibrate mechanical systems using shims, micrometers, and fine adjustments
  • Align laser systems using measurement tools like power meters and beam profilers
  • Optimize systems for performance and stability

Testing and inspection

  • Inspect incoming mechanical parts against drawings and quality requirements
  • Ensure parts are clean, deburred, and ready for assembly
  • Support and run system-level tests (thermal, vibration, shock)
  • Troubleshoot and improve system performance

Process and improvement

  • Document assembly steps and maintain traceability
  • Work with specialized tools, materials, and controlled environments (e.g. clean setups, epoxies)
  • Create simple tools or fixtures to improve assembly and testing
  • Work closely with optical, mechanical, and electronics engineers

What we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in precision assembly (optomechanics or similar complex hardware)
  • Strong practical skills working with small components and tight tolerances
  • Sub-millimeter level precision in hands-on work and a clean, structured way of operating
  • Experience with alignment, calibration, and mechanical stability
  • Attention to detail and strong quality mindset
  • Experience with inspection, testing, and quality control
  • Ability to troubleshoot and improve hardware systems
  • Comfortable working in lab environments and with specialized tools
  • Good communication skills and ability to work across teams
  • Professional working proficiency in English

Nice to have:

  • Experience with optical measurement equipment (beam profilers, power meters, alignment tools).
  • Experience working with free-space optics, lasers and optical benches.
  • Experience working with space related products, understanding of system behavior in harsh environments (thermal, vibration, vacuum)
  • Familiarity with cleanroom procedures and controlled environments.
  • Perform basic soldering and electronic tasks as needed to support the full system integration.
  • Experience with free-space optical communication, LiDAR, or similar systems
  • Knowledge of aerospace or defense standards (ECSS, MIL-STD)
  • Degree in Physics, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent hands-on experience (including personal projects or relevant technical hobbies)

What we offer:

  • Stock options for long term commitment to the Company
  • Private health insurance after trial period
  • Opportunity to work on next-generation space and defense systems
  • Small, experienced team with fast design iterations
