Astrolight is on a mission to connect space and Earth using laser communication. We build systems that make it possible to send data quickly and securely between satellites, ships, and ground stations, especially in places where traditional radio communication does not work. Our technology supports both commercial and defense missions and is designed to perform reliably in real-world conditions. We are a fast-growing, fast-moving team focussed to bring fiber-like connectivity to space and beyond.

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of precision opto-mechanical systems. You will be responsible for 3D design, modeling, and preparation of manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks, as well as supporting prototyping and integration efforts in the lab.

Responsibilities

We would like you to take ownership and be part of our mechanical design engineering efforts aimed at enabling fast laser links between our ATLAS space terminal and HERMES optical ground station or between ships carrying our POLARIS terminals. In this position you will:

  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D technical drawings in SolidWorks
  • Develop and maintain assemblies for compact mechanical subsystems
  • Design enclosures, mounts, heat sinks, and mechanical interfaces
  • Support mechanical integration of optical and electronic components
  • Prepare documentation and BOMs for manufacturing and assembly
  • Participate in prototype builds, lab tests, and design reviews

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent professional experience in mechanical design
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar (3D modeling, assemblies, drawings)
  • Knowledge of thermal management, materials, and tolerances
  • Understanding of machining, manufacturing, and assembly processes
  • Ability to work from high-level concepts to detailed designs
  • Comfortable with hands-on work and quick iteration cycles

Nice to have

  • Experience with opto-mechanical or electro-mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with FEA tools for basic stress or thermal analysis
  • Exposure to cleanroom or lab-based integration workflows
  • Knowledge of aerospace or defense standards (ECSS, MIL-STD)

What We Offer

  • Stock options package
  • Flexible hours, partial remote work
  • Small, experienced team with fast design iterations

Salary

Starting from €3,000 gross, depending on experience and skills
